If you would find yourself sneering at the mention of a mahloowoo (Aqaurien for fish fart) or scoffing at someone telling you about a recent spouting (Aquarien for a dolphin blowing air out of their blowhole up someone’s backside), you might be better off picking up a newspaper and playing sudoku or doing a crossword puzzle. This book is NOT for you
On the other hand, if you love adventure, talking animals, heartache, mystery, mythology, some good ole butt-kickin', AND mermaids/mermen then this book IS for you.
You’ve made it this far. Here’s your reward:
“'Crabs talk?' asked Benji.
'Everything in nature speaks. Not everything in nature listens,' said Octavius nodding Topside."
Benji Fisher has spent the first twelve years of his life growing up in a small fishing town, Topside. He’s gotten used to the gang of dolphins who follow him on his surfboard and the voices he hears under the water; odd things that have, in their repetition, become part of normal everyday life.
However, none of that prepares him for the recruitment speech he gets from an octopus named Octavius and three of the dolphins the night before his thirteenth birthday.
What would you do if your ‘calling’ in life required you to take a leap of faith? Would you take the plunge?
The oceans are in trouble, and they need your help.
That’s why I created M.A.R., a fast-paced, gnarly adventure to give the animals a voice, or at least one, we, the Topsiders can understand.
Once you take the plunge, you’ll experience the ocean like never before and fall in love and laughter with the creatures beneath the waves.
If you stay on shore, you’ll miss the ride of a lifetime.

MAR Magnificent, mesmerizing and delightful! In Mermaids are Real, Bo Wu has crafted an unbelievable world filled with delightful colorful characters, vivid sea creatures, beautiful coral reefs and plant life.
I found this to be a delightful read, these characters (especially the aquatic ones) are so charming and the humor throughout kept me smiling.
Mr. Wu has described aquatic life so so beautifully - fishes, sharks, whales, eels, corals reefs, and of course, the mermaids. Their homes, and traditions, and the color of their scales. Evocatively described and very beautiful. I sometimes went off re-reading those passages because they were so beautiful.
Oh Just Books
This is a fantastic book. If I had to say a book that it was like, the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan comes to mind. This series was just magical and I had the same feeling of magic and adventure when reading this book.
The entire world that Wu has created is fantastical, richly detailed so you feel like you are there.
Rae’s Reading Lounge
Mermaids Are Real: The Mystiq Prong is a mystical journey through and even more magical world. The worldbuilding in this story was amazing.
The concept of this book is not only beautiful but also very well-meaning and has a lot to teach its readers. The way the author executed the plot and the storyline, it came across beautifully and the message of the story gets highlighted but without being too obvious.
The Reading Bud
It was an epic ride to the fantasy world. If you like reading about mystical creatures, mermaids and even like watching barbies this book would be a perfect choice.
Bo Wu has created a fabulous mythology not only for mermaids but for the entire ocean world. A world often taken for granted or ignored by humanity as a whole, the author did a wonderful job highlighting the beauty of the natural ocean world and the danger of our carelessness and ignorance of our impact on that world.
